OCT
Getting Diagnosed from an OCT Scan
Did you know that a person can get an Alport diagnosis from just a scan? Well, an OCT or Optical Coherence Tomography is able to detect a type of thinning in the retina which is characteristic of missing collagen 4 in Alport patients. OCT's may be the future of Alport diagnoses and could help decrease the need for biopsies in diagnosing Alport syndrome.
An OCT can detect:
- Temporal Macular Thinning
- Inner Retinal Layer Thinning
- Foveal Avascular Zone Increase
- Thick Choroid
For more information on how an OCT may be beneficial in diagnosing Alport syndrome, the 2024 Alport Syndrome Foundation connect meeting in Denver, Colorado welcomed Paul S. Bernstein, MD, PhD to discuss this particular topic. More of his information may be found on the official ASF website. However, all ophthalmologists should have access to the same specific tools and equipment, so it may be a good idea to reach out to a local ophthalmologist for more information on OCT's.
